illustration only and don't refer to a real
family. Records have been found of two distinct Kelly
families in the Carrowlisconnor area through the
later nineteenth century: (1) As stated above, the
enquirer's earliest known male Kelly ancestor was
John Kelly of Carrowlisconnor, who would have been
born c. 1795; (2) The earliest traceable ancestor
of the other family was Richard Kelly who was born
c. 1803. Though it is most probable they were
related to each other, it is impossible to
establish with certainty how closely due to the
incomplete and inexplicit nature of available
records. They may even have been brothers, but this
cannot be proven. The enquirer's earliest traceable Kelly ancestor
is John Kelly with whom the genealogy below
begins:

JOHN KELLY, the
enquirer's great-great-great-grandfather,
born c.1795, died 3rd Apr. 1865 aged 70
years.6 He is listed in the Tithe
Applotment Book for Kilbride parish (1832)
as a tithe-payer in the townland of
"Carlisconner" (recte
Carrowlisconnor).7 He married
HONORIA LYONS; no record of this
marriage was found, and her place of origin is
not known, though it is likely she belonged to
one of the many Lyons families long-since
resident in the townland of Derryrevagh, about
one mile north of Carrowlisconnor. John and
Honoria lived in Carrowlisconnor and had issue
of whom three sons and one daughter -
MICHAEL, Honoria, James and Thomas - are
recorded:
1. MICHAEL KELLY, the enquirer's
great-great-grandfather, born c. 1838,
fl.1901, age given in census of that year as
63. He is listed in the General Valuation
of Rateable Property in Ireland (1856) as
a landholder in the townland of
Carrowlisconnor where he held a house and
shares of three parcels of land in
co-operation with other tenants.8
He married 25th May 1856 in Bekan parish
BRIDGET PRENDERGAST of
Mullaghbaun, Ballymore, daughter of
PATRICK PRENDERGAST (witnesses:
Michael Lyons and Mary
Prendergast).9 She was born in
1833, fl.1901, age given in census of that
year as 62. For details of her family see
"The Prendergast family of Mullaghbaun,
Ballymore" below. Michael and Bridget lived
in Carrowlisconnor and had issue of whom four
sons and eight daughters - Honoria (Mrs.
Morley), Bridget, Mary Anne, Catherine,
Elizabeth (Mrs. Murphy), Margaret,
PATRICK, Luke, John, Ellen (Mrs.
Browne), Michael and Sarah - are recorded:
A. Honoria Kelly, the
enquirer's great- grandaunt, bapt. 2nd
July 1857 (sponsors: Thomas Prendergast
and Mary Prendergast),10
fl.1901, age given in census of that year
as 37. She married 8th Mar. 1884 in
Ballymore church Michael Morley of
Greyfield, Kildonnell, son of Patrick
Morley (witnesses: Thomas Morley
