Family History
Report (pages 3 & 4)
Now to your own direct line:-
The first task in doing the search was to try
and locate a record of marriage between your
great-grandfathers parents namely Patrick
Reidy and Mary Carey ie your
great-great-grandparents. This search involved a
full and detailed study of all available
Marriage Registers at our disposal.
After an extensive search through same I pleased
to report that we uncovered the relevant entry, the
details being:-
Your great-great-grandparents Patrick
Reidy and Mary Carey were married on the
27th February, 1876 in Mary Carey's native
Parish of Doolin, which at one time was
known as the old Civil Parish of Killilagh. The
marriage took place in the Roman Catholic Church at
Touclea, which is to-day know as the Roman Catholic
church in Doolin. The Civil record of this marriage
which is held at the Courthouse in Ennis gives
Patrick Reidy's age as 22. His occupation
was given as a farmer. Birchfield was given as his
address. While his father was shown to have been
Patrick Reidy, a farmer. Mary Carey
gave her age as 19. While her father was shown to
have been John Carey, a farmer. Her address
at the time of marriage was given as Knockevan,
which is not a townland in it's right but is rather
a sub-division of the bigger townland of Lough
South. The witnesses at the marriage were Pat Reidy
and John Carey. Fr. Power who was Parish Priest in
Doolin at the time was shown to have married the
couple. From the enclosed copy of said Marriage
entry you will note that both your
great-great-grandparents Patrick Reidy and Mary
Carey signed the Register.
After their marriage in 1876 your
great-great-grandparents Patrick Reidy and
Mary Carey resided on the Reidy farm at
Birchfield. Birchfield is not a townland in it's
own right but is rather a sub-division of the
bigger townland of Beaghy. Beaghy is a townland (a
townland being the smallest rural division of a
parish) of approximately 150 acres situated in the
old Civil Parish of Kilmacrehy, which to-day along
with the old Civil Parish of Killaspuglonnane forms
what is known as the ecclesiastical Parish of
Liscannor. From the enclosed copy of the old
ordnance survey map you will note that
Birchfield/Beaghy is sited about a mile north west
of the village of Liscannor.
The Church Registers for the Parish (Baptismal)

Mary Carey:-

The dates given above are baptismal dates.
However, in those days because of the very high
level of infant mortality children were baptised
within a few days of birth. So while your
great-grandfather Thomas Reidy was baptised
on the 25th October, 1879 it would be reasonable to
assume that he was born sometime between the 20th
and 25th of that month.
